Survival Log Beginner Guide

Everything a new player needs to know about the core loop, written from confirmed mechanics only.

Survival Log gives you a simple promise: the apocalypse is coming in ten hours, and you are the only one who knows. Everything you do in those ten hours decides how long you survive after the outbreak. This guide explains the loop from the first run to the first rebirth.

Post-launch status

Survival Log is a released game, not an upcoming or demo-only title. The full version launched on Steam on 12 August 2026, and Midnight Workshop has continued publishing official fixes and quality-of-life changes. Use the current mission text and interface whenever an older route disagrees with this guide: post-launch patches can change how tasks are presented without changing the core survival loop.

Last Updated: 8 September 2026 · Last Verified: 8 September 2026 · Evidence: OFFICIAL_STEAM for release status and core loop; OFFICIAL_PATCH for the 14–19 August changes listed below. Exact values not stated by those sources remain UNVERIFIED.

The core loop

  1. Hoard for 10 hours — before the outbreak you scavenge the city (supermarkets, hardware stores, farmers' markets) and spend time and money on food, water, fortification and fuel. The in-game stockpile list shows what you have and what is still missing.
  2. Survive the outbreak — once the dead rise, your shelter becomes your lifeline. Manage hunger, stamina and morale while resources run low.
  3. Run your safehouse — farm crops, cook meals and keep power running with diesel, manual or solar generation. Expand the shelter floor by floor as needs grow.
  4. Face the world — weather (heavy rain, cold waves, blackouts) and zombie hordes keep testing your preparation. Fortify, set up defenses and keep your stockpile safe.
  5. Explore and trade — scavenge abandoned supermarkets, schools and ruins for rare resources, rescue trapped neighbors, and trade with distant survivors by drone.
  6. Die, learn, rebirth — every failure becomes experience. You rebirth with memory and start the next cycle stronger.

The stockpile guide, safehouse guide and power guide explain each part of the loop in detail.

Beginner tips

  • Use the stockpile list — the in-game list (Loot Spotter) shows exactly what you have gathered and which critical gaps remain. Fill the gaps before the clock runs out.
  • Balance spending — food and water keep you alive early, but fortification and fuel decide how long you last after the outbreak. Do not spend everything on one category.
  • Plan the safehouse layout — living quarters, storage, power generation and farming all take space. Design the layout before you install.
  • Diversify power — diesel, manual and solar generation cover different situations. Relying on one source leaves you in the dark.
  • Expect the second phase — hoarding is only half the game. After the outbreak you must manage stockpiles, morale and defense for the long term.
  • Treat death as progress — a failed run still improves the next one. Rebirth is part of the design, not a setback.

Beginner-facing patch changes

Official changeWhat it means for a new runEvidence
Tool CabinetThe 14 August update added a Tool Cabinet that can be bought or crafted, holds 80 slots, and can be accessed from the Workbench.OFFICIAL_PATCH (14 Aug)
Door tasksOfficial post-launch notes say Fix Door and Front Door reinforcement tasks are no longer time-limited; follow the current task state instead of an older countdown route.OFFICIAL_PATCH
Car trunkAfter buying a car, the Trunk tab can be opened directly from the backpack to store or retrieve supplies without walking to the car; the store Shopping Cart also gained a one-time explanation.OFFICIAL_PATCH
Current patch contextThe 19 August update (version 1.0.14613) continued changing survival, crafting, trading and interface behavior, so resolve older-guide conflicts in favor of the current build.OFFICIAL_PATCH (19 Aug)

The Tool Cabinet's 80-slot capacity is included because the official patch states that exact value. This does not make other storage capacities, item weights or ideal reserve quantities verified. Use the stockpile priority checklist for ordering decisions and the food and water guide for the supply buffer.

How to resolve an older guide after a patch

  1. Confirm that Steam has applied the current game update.
  2. Read the active task text and current interaction buttons before following a dated walkthrough.
  3. Prefer the current Trunk tab and untimed door-task behavior when an older guide tells you to walk to the car or race a door countdown.
  4. Treat any unstated quantity, timing, unlock order or location as UNVERIFIED until the current game or an official patch confirms it.
  5. Check the updates page and official Steam news when the visible state still disagrees.

How the phases connect

Every resource you invest before the apocalypse becomes the lifeline that keeps you alive after it. The cooking and farming systems turn that investment into a self-sufficient shelter, while exploration brings in what you could not hoard in time.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

Is Survival Log hard to learn?

The two-phase loop (hoard, then survive) is easy to grasp, but the second phase tests your planning: resources, morale and defense all need attention.

What is the goal of Survival Log?

Survive the outbreak, keep your safehouse running, uncover the truth behind the disaster, and reach your ending across multiple rebirths.

What happens when I die?

Death ends the run but becomes experience: you rebirth with memory and strengthen the next cycle.

Should I spend on food or fortification?

Both matter — food and water keep you alive early, fortification and fuel decide how long you last later. The official description frames it as the core decision.
